Embarking on a swim and snorkel adventure with whale sharks in Cancun is the ultimate summer tour experience.
No advanced or diving equipment is necessary, as the crystal-clear waters provide a stunning backdrop for an up-close encounter with the ocean’s largest fish that will leave you breathless.

Swimming with Whale Sharks in Cancun — What to Expect
Every summer, whale sharks gather in the warm waters of the Mexican Caribbean to feed on fish eggs. From June to September, we run daily trips to El Azul — a federally protected marine reserve approximately one hour north of Isla Mujeres — where you’ll snorkel alongside the largest fish in the ocean in their natural habitat.
This is a seasonal experience. Whale sharks are wild animals and sightings are not guaranteed, but El Azul is one of the most reliable whale shark aggregation sites in the world and our guides know the area well.
What You’ll See
Whale sharks are the main attraction but El Azul is full of marine life. On a typical trip you can also expect to see:
- Manta rays gliding below the surface
- Dolphins, often spotted on the way out or back
- Sea turtles
- Massive schools of fish that attract the whale sharks in the first place
How the Trip Works
The boat departs at 7:00 AM and returns between 1:00 and 2:00 PM depending on water conditions. The journey to El Azul takes approximately one hour each way, giving you plenty of time in the water once you arrive.
We offer two trip options:
Shared Trip — up to 10 passengers Our standard whale shark experience. Life jackets are mandatory on shared trips as per federal regulations in the protected area. This is a full group experience at a lower price point.
Private Trip — 5 or 10 passengers A private boat for your group only. On private trips we have more flexibility to explore outside the main protected area, allowing you to jump in without a life jacket. Wetsuits are available on private trips for added comfort in open water.
